Liquid Chlorophyll: What To Know Before Buying

"TikTokers are infatuated by chlorophyll. Here’s what the plant pigment can actually do for you and your health, and where to find it.

According to Trista Best, a registered dietitian and environmental health specialist, chlorophyll is “full of antioxidants,” which “act in therapeutic ways to benefit the body, especially the immune system.” Antioxidants work as anti-inflammatory agents inside the body, helping “improve the body's immune function and response,” she explained.

Because chlorophyll is a potent antioxidant, some researchers have found that consuming chlorophyll (or applying it topically) can help with acne, large pores and signs of aging. One small study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology tested the efficacy of a topical chlorophyllin on subjects with acne and deemed it effective as a treatment. Another study in the Korean Journal of Investigative Dermatology tested the effects of dietary chlorophyll on women over the age of 45 and found that it “significantly” improved wrinkles and skin elasticity.

“[Chlorophyll] is well known to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, so in that respect it likely does help to support the health of our cells, and thus tissue and organ function, but more research is needed to fully understand the entire scope of its health benefits,” Noelle Reid, MD, a board-certified LA-based family medicine physician.

For an on-the-go option, Kelly Bay, a functional medicine practitioner, clinical nutrition specialist and certified dietician nutritionist, said she’s a “big fan” of Chlorophyll Water. In addition to chlorophyll, the drink also contains vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin C and vitamin D. The antioxidant-rich water can be purchased either in a 12-pack or a 6-pack."

The One Thing Everyone's Adding To Their Water Right Now, Say Experts

There's a new health obsession taking over your Instagram and/or TikTok feed. It may look kind of gross, but people are buzzing about its body benefits…

Chorophyll Can Help Fight Disease

"Chlorophyll is best known for its ability to block carcinogens within the body by binding to them in the digestive tract," says Dr. Josh Axe, D.N.M., C.N.S, D.C., author of the new, best-selling book Ancient Remedies. "This stops a carcinogen from being circulated throughout the body and reaching susceptible tissues."

Chlorophyll is also loaded with antioxidants that can help repair any damage done by free radicals, which can contribute to conditions like Alzheimer's, cirrhosis, hypertension, and certain cancers.

Chlorophyll Can Help Detox Your Liver

Another popular benefit, according to Axe: "It's known to boost liver detoxification and aid healthy metabolism." Research shows that it helps fight against liver damage by supporting the liver's natural detoxification process.

Chlorophyll Can Aid In Weight Loss

It may also improve gut health, which could have a positive effect on weight loss.

Chlorophyll Can Improve Your Red Blood Cells

Liquid chlorophyll may also improve the quality of your blood, increasing the count—and overall health—of red blood cells. Why? Chlorophyll and hemoglobin (a molecule in red blood cells) have similar molecular structures. For this reason, research suggests that chlorophyll may help improve anemia symptoms."

How To Add More Chlorophyll To Your Diet

You can also buy water with chlorophyll already infused in it, like this Chlorophyll Water."

Can Liquid Chlorophyll Help Clear Acne?

Refinery 29:

TikTok Says Drinking Chlorophyll Will Clear My Acne - Should I Try It?

by Megan Decker

If you're on TikTok, you've probably seen some variation of the viral clip: an influencer promoting their "morning supplement routine," which involves a large glass of ice water, a medicinal-looking tincture of liquid chlorophyll, and a metal or glass straw (for aesthetic) to mix it all together.

"Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, asserts that when taken in conjunction with a healthy diet, drinking liquid chlorophyll might be good for the overall health of your skin. "There's some data suggesting that oral chlorophyll may enhance production of red blood cells in the body," he explains. "This could mean better delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your organs, including your skin."

TikTok Is Raving Over Liquid Chlorophyll.

Glamour:

Everyone Is Drinking Liquid Chlorophyll On TikTok

by Bianca London

TikTok users can't stop raving about the benefits of chlorophyll, claiming the wellness supplement has helped their skin and even their body odour (especially down below). Whilst it might sound like a potion from Harry Potter, it's an ancient health remedy that comes in supplement or liquid form that Miranda Kerr, Kourtney Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow (of course) have brought to the mainstream.

In recent years, there has been a rise in chlorophyll supplements as research suggests consuming it can have a number of health benefits for humans, from helping skin conditions and detoxing the blood to fighting body odour and boosting immunity.

Chlorophyll is packed with antioxidants, which work as anti-inflammatory agents inside the body.

"We are constantly exposed to a wide array of toxins, chemicals, and pollutants," explains an expert from Nature’s Sunshine’s Liquid Chlorophyll. "Some are made by our own body as metabolic waste, but many are external toxins from the surrounding environment. Whilst our bodies are designed to naturally metabolise, and expel unwanted elements, its ability to cope with these challenges can diminish with an ever-increasing overload of toxins." That's where chlorophyll comes in.

In another featured article on Glamour’s website, entitled “Drinking Liquid Chlorophyll Gave Me the Best Skin of My Life,” the journalist, Perrie Samotin, discovered benefits within about a week, stating that she "started to notice some changes, particularly with [her] energy levels and, yep, [her] skin.”

Samotin continues to explain that “according to Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital, there's been some data to suggest that liquid chlorophyll promotes red blood cell production, which means it also may help promote oxygen delivery to your tissues[. This] probably accounts for why I noticed an almost instantaneous change in my face's tone. The dullness started to recede within days, I looked more awake, and the dry patches along my cheeks started to clear up.”

Chlorophyll helps you feel good in lots of ways.

Poosh:

The Benefits of Chlorophyll Water

by Stefani Beckerman

Chlorophyll is a plant pigment and algae’s natural coloring. It is responsible for the absorption-of-light process called photosynthesis. AKA that thing from whatever grade that we learned about when I wasn’t paying attention. Now I know that it’s worth focusing on—photosynthesis is what creates energy. It converts light into energy. Light creates positive energy. Positive energy makes you feel good. Chlorophyll helps you feel good in lots of ways.

MIND

Chlorophyll detoxes the liver by assisting the elimination process of potentially harmful toxins from your whole system (body, mind, and soul).

BODY

Chlorophyll binds to toxic junk to block it from reaching us. It creates somewhat of a protective shield inside our bodies so that we have a barrier between toxicity and our cells. There’s a study from Oregon State University revealing that this “shield” sticks to carcinogens in our system so that they don’t get into our GI tract, making us sick later.

BEAUTY

Chlorophyll helps wounded cells repair themselves and behave like healthy cells, which means the cells are able to regenerate themselves. This is why stem cell therapy works.

What is Chlorophyll? A Plant Pigment With Health Benefits.

by Perri O. Blumberg

Chlorophyll is high in antioxidants, just like your fruits and veggies.

“Chlorophyll has also been shown to have antioxidant properties,” says Ivanir, pointing to this study, as well as a second here. “This can help to reduce oxidative damage via free radicals that will look to bind to cells in our body. When they bind they cause damage to those cells that could eventually lead to cancer.”

Citing chlorophyll’s therapeutic value particularly to our immune system, Trista K. Best, MPH, RD, at Balance One Supplments elaborates that “antioxidants have an anti-inflammatory side effect which can improve the body's immune function and response.”

Chlorophyll may increase the number of red blood cells in the body.

Quick science refresher: red blood cells contain hemoglobin, which transports oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body and then returns carbon dioxide from your body back to the lungs, so you can exhale it.

Here’s how the science plays out in your bloodstream: “Chlorophyll has a very similar structure to hemoglobin molecules in our blood. Hemoglobin makes up a large portion of your red blood cells and is responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body,” says Ivanir, referencing this review and this pilot study. “Because chlorophyll and hemoglobin share a very similar structure, chlorophyll has the ability to help boost the supply of red blood cells and aid in the ability to carry more oxygen throughout the [body].”

Chlorophyll may aid in weight loss.

“You may wonder why celery juice and other green juices are always trending with the health and wellness crowd, and there’s a good reason for that. These drinks are packed with chlorophyll, which has the capacity to act on hunger hormones, suppressing hunger and boosting the feeling of satiety,” says Shaw, citing this study. “Therefore, leading one to consume fewer calories overall and lose weight. Of course, weight loss isn’t always the goal, but these drinks are also packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that improve overall health.”

Chlorophyll may help your complexion.

A quick Google search for “chlorophyll skincare products” elicits many, many results—and these beauty goodies could very well boost your skin’s appearance. “Many chlorophyll enthusiasts and researchers claim chlorophyll is beneficial for skin health because of the anti-aging properties of antioxidants, as well as red blood cell health, cellular health, and weight loss,” explains Best.

Could Chlorophyll Be An Effective Acne Remedy?

The List:

This Unlikely Ingredient May Be An Effective Remedy For Acne.

by Paige Pichler

You may remember chlorophyll from your high school biology class as an important part of a plant's reproductive cycle. But, later in life, you probably haven't had much use for it outside of a science lab. Recently, however, liquid chlorophyll is actually becoming a stand-out treatment for acne and a staple in the wellness world — gracing different tinctures and tonics while touting some serious skin-saving benefits. Since blemishes stem from inflammation of the pore, this ingredient helps soothe bumps and irritation with its high antioxidant count. Essentially, it helps fight off the irritants and bacteria that can lead to break outs.

"Based on several clinical trials, chlorophyll likely works through both decreasing inflammatory markers in the skin and decreasing P. acnes, a bacteria thought to contribute to acne formation," Rachel Nazarian of Schweiger Dermatology Group explains to Byrdie.

Joshua Zeichner, M.D, tells InStyle, "Chlorophyll is a trendy ingredient right now and some data shows skin-renewing and antioxidant benefits, but the jury is out on whether it's any more effective than traditional antioxidant treatments, like vitamin C and retinol."

If you're looking to ingest the substance, there seems to be more correlation between the ingredient and skin-enhancing benefits this way. "Chlorophyll's natural antioxidants are thought to fight free radical damage, leading to improvement in signs of skin aging, such as decreased wrinkles and repairing DNA damage," Nazarian explains to Byrdie.

Is Liquid Chlorophyll Really That Good For You?

MindBodyGreen:

So Is Liquid Chlorophyll Really That Good For You? A Clinical Dietician Answers:

by Abby Moore

Liquid chlorophyll is all over TikTok these days, where users are swearing by its ability to clear skin and manage inflammation, among other benefits. With so many lofty claims, a little bit of skepticism is healthy. So, clinical dietitian nutritionist Steph Grasso, M.S., took to the platform to share her opinion on the trend. Here's what she has to say.

Typically, the supplement form contains a derivative of chlorophyll called chlorophyllin, or sodium copper chlorophyllin. According to one small study, it may help manage acne and reduce the size of pores when applied topically.

Researchers have also found that copper chlorophyllin contains a higher amount of antioxidants than natural chlorophylls, making them a helpful addition to whole foods—but still not a replacement.

Can Chlorophyll Water Help Treat Acne?

Pop Sugar:

People On TikTok Are Drinking Chlorophyll Water To Treat Acne - But Does It Work?

by Danielle Jackson

"Chlorophyll is what allows plants to convert sunlight to energy, as well as what gives plants their green color," board-certified dermatologist and chief medical officer at Sanova Dermatology, Ted Lain, MD, told POPSUGAR. "Liquid chlorophyll contains chlorophyllin, which is complexed with copper, ensuring the delivery of actual chlorophyll to the bloodstream."

So can chlorophyll actually help treat acne? Well . . . kind of.

"Chlorophyll is a potent antioxidant, meaning that it can help reduce the damage caused by stress, the environment, and sunlight," Dr. Lain said. "We know that acne sufferers do have a higher need for antioxidants in order to reverse the inflammation and damage caused by pimples; therefore, theoretically, there may be a place for topical or ingested chlorophyll in an acne regimen."

Health enthusiasts & nutritionists have long been advocates

of the many health benefits of chlorophyll.

“How Chlorophyll Keeps Your Skin Clear & Glowing” on Zoe Report goes into great detail on the benefits of chlorophyll skincare and as an anti-aging remedy. “Chlorophyll can certainly help when thinking of ways to keep your skin looking younger and healthier in a more natural way,” Dr. Devika Icecreamwala, a board-certified dermatologist, confirms to Zoe Report. “It’s an excellent source of vitamins A,C, E, and K — these can act to replenish the skin and keep it firm, increase collagen production, and help reduce free radical damage.”

Dr. Nicholas Perricone, MD, a dermatologist, explains to InStyle that "chlorophyll is a powerful antioxidant with both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, providing excellent health benefits both internally and when used in topical applications."

In an article entitled "TikTok Says Drinking Chlorophyll Will Clear My Acne - Should I Try It?" Refinery 29 discusses the potential skincare benefits and the anti-aging remedies of chlorophyll's TikTok phenomenon with Dr. Hadley King, MD, a New York based dermatologist, who explains that "in the human body, chlorophyll has antioxidant properties and there has been shown to potentially improve signs of skin aging."

Livestrong, a website dedicated to helping “all people make informed decisions about their health,” states that “liquid chlorophyll is a popular choice for those trying to slim down” with a 2014 journal study published confirming “that it may help with weight loss.” Livestrong further states that drinking chlorophyll water can “protect your life naturally,” “fight oxidant stress,” and “ward off chronic disease.”

Spartan Race, a popular website dedicated to fitness enthusiasts, included an article entitled "Can Drinking Chlorophyll Water Enhanced Your Performance?" that goes into great detail on the potential benefits of chlorophyll. Keith Kantor, Ph.D., a nutritionist and dietician, tells Spartan, “Chlorophyll water suppresses appetite, aids in weight loss, decreases spikes in insulin (which lessens cravings), helps with skin healing, helps in detoxifying the blood, increases energy, helps in eliminating odors ([works] as a natural deodorant), and helps in boosting the immune system.”

In an article entitled “Chlorophyl: The Plant-Based Superfood with Major Skin Benefits” on Spotlyte by Allergan, they lauded Chlorophyll Water®, stating: "This enhanced water will deliver your daily anti-aging dose of chlorophyll with every sip.”

Clearly, liquid chlorophyll and Chlorophyll Water® are making headlines, and will likely continue to do so as more people share their experience with chlorophyll on social media and as studies and specialists come forward alongside online content creators to promote the benefits of chlorophyll.
